Five Ideas for Indoor Team Building Activities

One of the main ways in which businesses achieve success is through the help of the company’s employees. A company without hard working and motivated employees can become a barrier to its own goals.

Employees need to feel worthy, and motivated to work to the best of their potential.

They also need to feel part of the team, and be inspired by one another. The most effective way of achieving this is through regular group team-building activities and challenges.

Whilst is it important to create team-building activities, it is equally as important to be creative with team-building ideas, as boring activities will definitely not motivate anyone! Organising a team-building day is an opportunity to wow employees.

Nobody wants to think of team-building as a chore, give them an experience they’ll love to take part in. By providing them with activities that they will actually take an interest in, you’ll ensure everyone feels part of the team.


1. BACK-TO-BACK DRAWING

Team-building doesn’t always require travelling to new destinations. There are a plethora of indoor team building activities which are just as effective as those which are outdoors. Indoor team-building games are perfect for companies with a low budget or companies that are just starting up.

A prime example is a game called ‘back-to-back drawing’, a team building activity brilliant for enhancing communication skills.

 

What you’ll need:

  • A piece of paper
  • Pens
  • Pictures of basic shapes and symbols

 

Set Up of the Game

  • Have an even amount of people taking part in this game and then divide people into pairs – pre organise the pairs, as this can avoid time wasting.
  • Once the pairs have been put together, have them sit back-to-back.
  • Provide one person in the team with a clipboard and pencil.
  • Provide the other person in the team with an image of the shape or symbol they will need to describe.

 

Group Size Needed for the Game

The number of people does not matter for this game, but it is important to ensure there is an even number overall as this way everybody can have a partner.

 

Total Time

The overall time to complete this task will take around 60 minutes.

  • 5 minutes read out the pairs and get them to sit back-to-back.
  • 5 minutes to provide everybody with the equipment they need.
  • 15 to complete the first round of the task
  • 15 minutes for the second pair to describe the image to their pair.
  • 20 minutes to review and debrief.

 

Instructions

Split the group of individuals into pairs and make them sit back to back. Between the pair they will be given a picture of a shape or symbol and a plain piece of paper and a pen – the idea is for one person to describe the picture given to them which should hopefully instruct the other person to draw what they believe is on the other piece of paper – the person with the picture must be sure to not to tell their pair what the picture is.

After a set amount of time, the pair must compare the original image and the image drawn – the winners will be the pair who has the most accurate replica.

2. MEMORY WALL

MEMORY WALL Indoor Team Building Activity

Whatever your indoor team building ideas are, it is best to start your day by creating a simple ice breaking task. Breaking the ice between employees can be difficult – it’s key to gain the right balance of friendship as it is important to not break the professionalism between them.

 

What you’ll need:

  • Post-it notes
  • whiteboard (optional)

 

Set Up of the Game

  • Make a comfortable area for everybody – this can include providing seats, food and beverages.
  • Prepare the board and set out the pens and paper on a table.
  • Bring together all of team members into the chosen room and have them take a seat.
  • Explain the game to the group.

 

Group Size Needed for the Game

This particular team building game does not necessarily require a specific number of people, however it is advised to not have too many people participate as can cause people to become too distracted by each other.

There for a recommended number of team members to have should be a maximum of 15 people participate, as this can ensure that everyone can join in the discussion successfully.

 

Total time

  • 10-15 minutes to set up the area.
  • 5 minutes to get everybody comfortable.
  • 10 minutes to explain the team building game.
  • 20 minutes to review and debrief.

 

Instructions

Using a whiteboard, write a few general work-related topics such as: ‘my first day at work’, ‘work travel’ or ‘work parties’ etc. – this can also be done on using the post-it notes, which can be stuck onto a board. After these have been written, ask the group to choose one of the topics and share their story with the group – allowing the team to bond over these shared experiences.

This method can be used for a variety of topics, it can be used as a way for employees to share positivity about the co-workers, for instance what they think their team does well and what they like about them.

3. TOXIC WASTE

TOXIC WASTE Indoor Team Building Activity

Inside every business it is very likely that at some point conflict will occur, either between employees, employees and managers or even staff and outsiders.

Whatever the scenario, they all need to be approached and managed in a professional manner; it is key for every individual inside the company to be taught the best ways to overcome these problems.

This can be done through various indoor team-building activities. One of the best ways to do this is through creative problem solving and through collaborating skills.

 

What you’ll need:

  • 1 small and 1 large bucket
  • 1 rope
  • 1 bungee cord loop
  • 8 bungee cords
  • 8 tennis balls

 

Set Up of the Games

  • Form the toxic waste radiation zone – this can be done by using the rope to make a 8-10ft diameter, which will be located on the ground. To make this game more challenging, make the radiation zone bigger.
  • Fill your bucket with water or tennis balls and then place this in the centre of the circle/radiation zone.
  • Place the two ropes on the outer part of the radiation zone.

 

Group Size Needed for the Game

The group size should be around 8-12, however the minimum number of group members can be as little as 6.

 

Total time

The overall time frame in which this task should be completed in is 45 minutes

  • 5 minutes to set up the team building course.
  • 5 minutes to brief the team members on what they need to do.
  • 20 minutes to complete the task.
  • 15 minutes to debrief and review.

 

Instructions

Firstly using the rope, make an 8-foot circle on the ground that represents a toxic waste radiation zone – this can be made bigger if you wish to make it more challenging. Next, put the balls in the small bucket and place it in the centre of the circle – this represents the toxic waste. The larger bucket needs to be placed about 30 feet away.

The aim of this activity is for the team to use the bungee cord to transfer the tennis balls from the small bucket into the larger bucket, all in a selected amount of time. Whilst transferring the balls, the team members must be very careful to not cross the line into the radiation zone; as if they do then they are eliminated from the game. Similarly, elimination will occur if team members drop the balls.

4. MINEFIELD

This is one of the indoor team building activities that requires a lot of communication between team members – these activities are perfect for building communication skills between employees and creating support amongst each other.

By participating in this, team members will be able to recognise their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their team members strengths and weaknesses, which will allow them to work in the most effective way possible.

 

What you’ll need:

  • An empty room/space
  • assortment of various common office items

 

Set Up of the Games

  • Find a hall way or a small room to lay the objects in.
  • Choose the items you wish to use during this team building activity.
  • Lay out the minefield flat on the floor in the chosen space.
  • Brief the team on what the rules of the game are.
  • Have the entire team to try and cross the minefield without stepping on the mine.

 

Group Size Needed for the Game

This particular game works better when there are a larger number of people, but the numbers can vary between 2-30 participants.

 

Total time

The estimated total time for this game should last around 60 minutes.

  • 5 minutes to brief and set up
  • 35-45 minutes to achieve outcome
  • 10 minutes to review and debrief.

 

Instructions

The items which can be taken from the office can be objects such as: boxes, chairs etc. – these will be placed in the empty space you have chosen to create an obstacle course. Get your team into pairs – be sure to put people into pairs with people they don’t usually communicate with and blindfold one of them.

This task is very simple; the individual who is not blindfolded must direct their partner verbally from one end of the obstacle course to the other end without touching any of the items.

5. SPIDER WEB

Whilst putting employees into pairs is very useful to allow people to fully interact with people they don’t usually interact with, it also stops them from bonding with others, therefore it is effective to create indoor team-building games which involves a group of people to work together.

Indoor team-building activities such as the spider web are a fun and exciting way for employees to put their heads together and motivate each other to complete the task successfully.

The spider web is a brilliant way to implement creative problem solving, whilst also building relationships between the teams.

 

What you’ll need:

  • String
  • tape
  • soft crash mats

 

Set Up of the Games

  • Create the spider’s web using the string/rope and tape.
  • Once the spider’s web has been made, place the crash mats around it – this will prevent injuries if anyone was to fall.
  • Show and explain the team building course to all of the team members.

 

Group Size Needed for the Game

It is recommended to not have a huge group for this task, as people can become very tired and uninterested if there are too many people to lift through the holes. Therefore aim to stick to around 8-12 team members.

 

Total time

The overall time to complete this team building activity is around 55 minutes.

  • 10-15 minutes setting up.
  • 10 minutes explaining the team building activity
  • 20 minutes to review and debrief.

 

Instructions

The string will be used to create a giant spiders web – the best way to do this is by taping two pieces of string across a doorway, then cut around five pieces of string about four inches long and diagonally tape them.

However, make sure the holes in the web are big enough to fit a person through them and equally be sure the holes are not too big.

Indoor group activities for team building such as this allow people to work together and motivate each other to get all of their members to fit through the holes in the web without touching it – a perfect task to remind employees that they can help each other through solving problems together.
